Faced with another back-and-forth third set, the 13th-ranked Hope College volleyball team closed out a second MIAA opponent this week by scoring the match's final two points.
The Flying Dutch won at Saint Mary's College in three sets on Friday, 25-20, 25-16, 26-24. The third-set score and finish matched Tuesday's MIAA opener against Calvin University.
Hope extended its winning streak to nine and improved to 13-4 overall.
The Orange and Blue overcame a 5-1 Saint Mary's run to start the third set, reeling off six straight points to take a 13-11 lead. The Belles (12-4, 0-2 MIAA) responded with the next six points.
The back-and-forth continued, with the Flying Dutch scoring six of the next seven points to go ahead 19-18. The score was tied five more times before junior
Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) and senior
Ella Contant (Elmhurst, Illinois / York Community) finished the set with back-to-back kills off sets from senior
Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Saline).
Lee — the American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III Player of the Week — collected 44 assists, her most in a three-set match this season.
Sophomore
Olivia Wyma (Hartland, Wisconsin / Arrowhead) recorded a match-high 12 kills.
Senior
Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township) added 11 kills, while Burbridge and Contant had nine apiece. Freshman
Kiera Morrison (Bartlett, Illinois / Wheaton Academy) finished with seven.
Fox also led the defensive effort with 11 digs.
Hope's next match is Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at Adrian College.
