Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Josh Decker '25

Marcus Wourman's 3 at the Buzzer Launches Men's Basketball Past Wheaton

With 4.3 seconds left in the game, Parker Hovey rebounded a missed free throw and kicked the ball quickly to Marcus Wourman.

The Lansing, Michigan, native performed a little magic, dribbling quickly up the court and burying a 3 from the left wing that hit nothing but the bottom of the net as time expired to give the Hope College men's basketball team a thrilling 76-75 victory over Wheaton College (Illinois) on Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Wourman finished with 22 points in 31 minutes for the Flying Dutchmen, who dramatically evened their record at 2-2. The East Lansing High School graduate also contributed two assists and two rebounds while not committing a turnover.

"Amazing effort by our senior captain to find a way and put us on his back," Mitchell said of Wourman, who scored 13 points over the final 4 minutes, 47 seconds.

After a jubilant celebration on the court, Wourman said Hovey (Hart, Michigan / Hart) told me to be ready when Wheaton was at the free-throw line.

"It is funny Parker said it was going to come off and go right to me," Wourman said. "I got it and it actually felt good. I felt the defender on my hip and when I stopped on a dime, he went past me and it felt good as soon as it left my hand. To have that in DeVos in my final first game, and the 20th anniversary of DeVos with a crowd like this was crazy."

Hope overcame a 68-56 deficit with 4:48 remaining.

The Flying Dutchmen's last lead before Wourman's heroics was 40-38 on a layup from freshman Brendan Cargill (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Hills Central) 3:39 into the second half.

Hovey chipped in 14 points. Freshman Avery Sanchez (Turlock, California / John H. Pittman)  added 13 points.

Cargill recorded his first career double-double finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 3 p.m. vs. North Central College (Illinois) at DeVos Fieldhouse.
