No. 23 Women's Basketball Stymies Wisconsin-River Falls

A decisive fourth-quarter defensive stand guided the No. 23 Hope College women's basketball team to a 58-41 road win at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday.

Hope (2-0) shut out UW-River Falls over the final 6 minutes, 57 seconds. The Falcons (1-1) entered the matchup fresh off a win over No. 18 Calvin University on Friday.

The Flying Dutch controlled much of the first quarter behind early free throws from sophomore Leah Richards (DeWitt, Michigan/Lansing Catholic) and consistent defensive pressure. After the Falcons briefly took a second-quarter lead, Hope responded with composure to regain control before halftime and never trailed again.

Hope steadily expanded the margin with its inside scoring and presence on the glass, out-rebounding UW-River Falls 45-39.

Richards recorded a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double, showcasing relentless effort on both ends of the floor. Her touch around the rim and control of the boards anchored Hope's interior advantage.

Senior guard Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan/South Christian) added nine points, two steals and one assist.

Junior Maddie Petroelje (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) chipped in eight points, including two 3-pointers, while sophomore Anna Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) posted seven points, 12 rebounds and four assists in a well-rounded performance.

Off the bench, junior Grayson Guy (Petoskey, Michigan / Petoskey) provided a spark with seven points and three rebounds, helping pace a deep rotation that saw 10 players score.

The game's decisive stretch came in the fourth quarter.

After UW-River Falls trimmed the deficit to single digits, Hope's defense shut the door. The Falcons were held to 25% shooting from the field and 22.6% from 3-point range for the game.

Hope returns to action on Friday, Nov. 14, against Colorado College in the Hope-Calvin Tournament in Grand Rapids. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
