In a game with postseason implications, the Hope College men's basketball team rose to the occasion, showcasing a balanced offensive attack and a relentless defensive effort to earn an 80-57 win on the road against Adrian College on Wednesday evening.
With three regular-season games remaining, the Flying Dutchmen own sole possession of third place in the MIAA standings with a 7-4 league record. Hope (12-10 overall) is one game ahead of fourth-place The University of Olivet and three games ahead of fifth-place Adrian College and Albion College.
The Flying Dutchmen trail second-place Trine University by two games in the chase for the MIAA Tournament's second and final first-bound bye. The third- and fourth-place teams host first-round games in the MIAA Tournament.
At Adrian, Hope established its presence on both ends of the floor from the opening tip. The offense found an early rhythm, allowing the Orange and Blue to jump out to a 20-7 lead just seven minutes into game play and a 41-31 halftime margin.
The Flying Dutchmen shot 56% from the field for the game, including 43% from beyond the arc (7-16).
Hope also outrebounded the Bulldogs by a 39-20 margin.
Junior Marcus Wourman (Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing HS) led the Hope charge by delivering 19 points on 50% shooting from the field (8-16) and from beyond the arc (3-6).
Senior Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian Central) provided 18 points going 88.9% from the field (8-9).
Quillan also brought down a game-high nine rebounds.
Sophomore Parker Hovey (Shelby, Michigan / Hart) joined the double-digit point club against Adrian with 17 points.
The victory was the third in a row for Hope. The Bulldogs (6-16, 4-7 MIAA) received a team-high 11 points from Nick Seifert.
Hope's next matchup is on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 3 p.m. at Alma College at 3 p.m. It is the second of three consecutive road games for the Flying Dutchmen.
