Men's Lacrosse Home Opener Thwarted by Elmhurst Comeback

Junior Andrew Lanham and sophomore Gibson Heethuis recorded multi-goal games for the Hope College men's lacrosse team during a 13-8 loss to visiting Elmhurst University (Illinois) on Monday.

The Bluejays spoiled the Flying Dutchmen's home opener by rallying from a 4-0 deficit after the first period.

Elmhurst erupted for five goals during the second period to tie the score at 5-5 at halftime, then produced four-goal third and fourth periods.

Lanham (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford HS) and Heethuis (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) both finished with season-high goalscoring efforts: Lanham three, Heethuis two.

The Flying Dutchmen nearly matched Elmhurst in shots, making 35 for the Bluejays' 38. Hope, however, committed 26 turnovers — 10 more than the Bluejays.

Eli Spence, a preseason All-American, topped Elmhurst (1-1) with five goals and two assists.

Hope (0-3) next plays on Saturday, March 1, at 1 p.m. against Lake Forest University (Illinois) at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
