Men's Lacrosse Dominates Northland, MIAA Season Up Next

Three first-time goal scorers joined the fun for the Hope College men's lacrosse team during one of the highest-scoring games in program history on Wednesday.

Freshmen Tommy Garvey (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston HS), John Jarosz (Justice, Illinois / Argo) and Andrew Renken (McLean, Michigan / Trinity School at Meadowview) all contributed to a 25-2 victory at home against Northland College (Wisconsin).


Hope's output tied for the fourth-highest scoring game in program history and finished two off the school record.


The second-highest scoring game of the season extended Hope's winning streak to four games and wrapped up non-league play. The Flying Dutchmen scored 26 goals at Illinois Tech on March 11.


Hope (5-4 overall) starts the pursuit of an MIAA title repeat on Wednesday, April 2, at 7 p.m. against Albion College. The Flying Dutchmen and the Britons finished 1-2 in the MIAA preseason coaches poll. The two teams have combined to win the past seven MIAA regular-season championships.


Despite resting its starting lineup, Hope flourished against Northland (0-5).


The Flying Dutchmen scored the first six goals of the game, leading 6-1 after the first quarter.


Hope erupted for 10 second-quarter goals for a 16-1 halftime lead.


Freshmen Jack VanEss (Caledonia, Michigan / Caledonia) and Jack Zuiderveen (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) shared game-high honors with three goals each.


Six of their teammates chipped in two goals apiece: juniors Carl Bailey (Oxford, Michigan / Oxford), Owen Claar (Birmingham, Michigan / Seaholm) and Will Tobias (San Diego, California / St. Augustine); sophomore Weston Godbold (Lowell, Michigan / Lowell); and freshmen Ryan Gillen (Portage, Michigan / Portage Northern), Luke O'Connell (Colorado Springs, Colorado / Discovery Canyon Campus) and Ben Torrence (Portage, Michigan / Portage Northern).


Gillen also added a career-high and team-high five assists.


Freshman Brecken Overweg (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) won 83.3% of faceoffs (25-30), leading to a 57-4 Hope edge in shots.


Sophomore goalkeeper Ridge Boehmer (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) made two saves for the Flying Dutchmen.
