Baseball Erupts for 11 Runs Twice, Sweeps Olivet

The Hope College baseball team turned it up to 11 and rocked on to the sound of hard-hitting bats.

The Flying Dutchmen scored 11 times in each game of a doubleheader sweep of The University of Olivet, winning 11-1 in a 10-run, rule-shortened seven innings and 11-6 in nine on Saturday at Boeve Baseball Stadium.

Hope took the series and snapped a seven-game losing streak by blasting three home runs, one triple and four doubles over two games. The Flying Dutchmen (8-20, 3-7 MIAA) finished the doubleheader with 23 hits.

Two pitchers, one a starter and one a reliever, delivered power ballads on the mound with career-best performances.

Head coach Ryan Dorow was proud of his team's performance.

"It's huge. When our backs were up against the wall, we showed a little fight," said Dorow, whose team rebounded after losing Friday's series opener at Olivet, 2-1, on a ninth-inning walk-off. It was Hope's fifth one-run MIAA game of the season.

"This is exactly what we needed today. I thought overall, we just played the game better. We had more energy, flying around the ballpark a little better," Dorow said.

In Game 1, Hope jumped to an 8-0 lead with four-run rallies in the second and third innings.

Senior Dylan Kleinedler (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Stevenson HS) started the show, crushing a pitch into the right-center field gap for a three-run homer in the second. It was the shortstop's first homer of the season.

Kleinedler went 2-for-4 with four RBIs after an RBI triple during a two-run sixth. Hope collected nine hits.

Junior centerfielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the third. Junior designated hitter Colton Kinnie (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm) scored three times after singling once and walking twice.

Winning pitcher Ian Sanders (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville) matched his career-longest outing, scattering three hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. The junior righthander struck out four while earning his first victory. Sanders is 1-3.

In Game 2, the Flying Dutchmen grabbed a 4-0 lead with a four-run first. Senior catcher Ben Stratman (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Pioneer) opened with a two-run single and scored on a two-run homer from DeMann.

It was DeMann's second home run of the season and his second in two days.

Olivet (8-20, 3-8 MIAA) scored in each of the first three innings and tied the score at 4-4 with a two-run third. DeMann blasted a go-ahead, two-run double in the third.

DeMann finished 3-for-4 with a season-best four RBIs.

Hope totaled 14 hits against two Olivet pitchers, getting two-hit games from junior first baseman Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton) and freshman leftfielder Corbin Bennetts (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison).

Seabaugh hammered a solo homer in the eighth, his third of the season.

Reliever Thomas Bacigalupo (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) fired a career-best five scoreless innings to earn the victory. The sophomore right-hander struck out a career-high eight while allowing only one hit. Bacigalupo (1-2) walked two batters.

Hope's next game is Monday, April 14, at 2 p.m. at Kalamazoo. Because of that makeup game, the Flying Dutchmen's home game on Tuesday, April 15, against Grace Christian University has been canceled.
