Men's Lacrosse Avoids Taxing Day, Soars Past Kalamazoo

The Hope College men's lacrosse team ensured it wasn't too taxing of a day.

The Flying Dutchmen started fast and never trailed at Kalamazoo College on Tuesday, cruising to a 13-7 victory.

Hope (9-4, 4-0 MIAA) improved to 10-0 all-time against the Hornets.

The Flying Dutchmen also set themselves up to play for an MIAA regular-season title share in their next match on Senior Day on Saturday, April 19, at 4:30 p.m. against Trine University. Saturday's game is also poster giveaway day.

With two games remaining, Hope leads second-place Adrian College and Albion College by one game. The Flying Dutchmen defeated both Adrian and Albion already to earn the tiebreaker edge for the top seed in the MIAA Tournament.

Hope is seeking its fifth MIAA regular-season championship and the second title repeat in program history. The Flying Dutchmen last accomplished the feat in 2019.

At Kalamazoo, Hope built a 2-0 lead in the opening 7 minutes, 11 seconds and held a 5-1 edge after the first quarter thanks to a 16-4 advantage in shots.

Senior Sam Bowen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) scored a game-high four goals, including one in each quarter.

Bowen now has 97 career goals, putting the business major on the verge of joining the Flying Dutchmen's 100-goal club.

Junior Jackson Early (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing) and sophomore Gibson Heethuis (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) chipped in three goals.

Early and Heethuis reached the 20-goal mark for the season; Early with 22, Heethuis with 20. Senior Nick McCreery (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) tops Hope with 23 goals after scoring once against the Hornets.

The Flying Dutchmen outshot Kalamazoo by a 37-31 margin. Goalkeeper Tony Valade made 18 saves for the Hornets (6-6, 1-4).

Junior Jack Balmforth (Livonia, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) made eight saves for Hope.
