Ten Assists Power Women's Lacrosse Past Trine in First-Place Showdown

Perfect passing propelled the Hope College women's lacrosse team past Trine University, 17-8, on Wednesday and put the Flying Dutch into a share of the MIAA lead.

The Orange and Blue drew assists on five of their first seven goals and raced to a 7-1 first-quarter lead. The lead grew to 13-1 by halftime at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Hope improved to 9-5 on the season with the team's fifth victory in six games. The Flying Dutch (4-0 MIAA) joined idle Calvin University atop the league standings. Trine (9-3, 4-1) fell a half-game back.

Senior Kerrigan Brown (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt HS) recorded six of the Orange and Blue's 10 assists, tying for their second-highest single-game total this season.

Four of the assists came during the opening 15 minutes.

Brown's career-best six assists tied for the third-most by a Hope player in a single game and one off the stadium record.

Junior Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) was the beneficiary of four Kerrigan Brown assists.

Julia Brown matched her season-best with a game-high five goals.

The Flying Dutch finished with eight goal scorers, including two with three goals apiece: junior Sydney LaPrairie (Rochester, Michigan / Stoney Creek) and freshman Ireland Brown (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt).

Ireland Brown equaled her career-high in goals.

Junior Caleigh Randall (Lansing, Michigan / DeWitt) added two goals.

The Orange and Blue also received a goal apiece from senior Juli Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana / Penn), juniors Stella Bottum (Alto, Michigan / Caledonia) and Alyssa Segura (Naples, Florida / Barron Collier), and freshman Elliana Hillard (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt).

A 21-7 edge in draw controls powered the Flying Dutch. Randall and junior Caroline Curnutt (Fishers, Indiana / Heritage Christian) shared game-high honors with six draw controls apiece.

Defensively, Hope became just the third opponent to hold Trine under 10 goals this season. Senior goalkeeper Samantha Smith (Westfield, Indiana / Westfield) made seven saves.

Izabelle Dominski topped the Thunder with four goals.

The Flying Dutch's next game is Saturday, April 19, at 1 p.m. against Albion College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. It is Senior Day.
