Men's Lacrosse Zapped by Trine in MIAA Tournament Semifinals

The Hope College men's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Trine University in the MIAA Tournament semifinals, falling 8-6 at home on Tuesday.

The MIAA regular-season champion and top-seeded Flying Dutchmen finished the season with an 11-5 overall record.

Fifth-seeded Trine (14-5) advanced to its first MIAA Tournament final by scoring the game's final five goals.

The Thunder will play at third-seeded Albion College on Friday, May 2. Albion won at second-seeded Adrian College, 12-10, Wednesday night. The MIAA Tournament champion receives the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The loss snapped Hope's 10-game winning streak this season and a six-game winning streak in MIAA Tournament semifinals.

The Flying Dutchmen broke a 3-3 halftime tie by striking three times in the first 4 minutes, 20 seconds of the second half.

Senior Luke Wierengo (Northville, Michigan / Northville HS) made it 4-3 Hope 13 seconds into the third quarter after a face-off win from senior Caden Brainard (Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer).

Junior Jack McNamara (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) and senior Sam Bowen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) struck 20 seconds apart, extending the Flying Dutchmen's lead to 6-3 with 10:40 remaining.

Trine, however, clamped down defensively and shut out Hope the rest of the way.

The Thunder chipped away at their deficit before pulling even at 6-6 on Landon Kruse's goal with 4:23 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Mitchell Vogelwede then ripped in the go-ahead goal with 2:43 remaining.

Trine scored four times in the fourth quarter. Goalie Luke Arnold made 13 saves for the Thunder.
