One week removed from becoming the first school to win three consecutive MIAA regular-season women's lacrosse championships, Hope College completed a second three-peat Friday night at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
The Flying Dutch used a quick-strike offense to score eight first-period goals and never let up in defeating Trine University, 21-5, on Friday to win their third consecutive MIAA tournament championship.
Hope (13-5) becomes the second MIAA team to win three straight tournaments, joining Calvin University, which won three in a row from 2016 to 2018. The Flying Dutch clinched the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament with their 13
th win of the season, equaling the school record set one year ago.
Head coach
Keagan Pieri expressed pride over the Flying Dutch's double three-peat.
"We're pretty blessed to have the kids that we have here," she said. "I think they are amazing humans and allow us to do what we do. They work really hard, and they're awesome."
Now Hope looks ahead to the NCAA tournament. The Flying Dutch, who will be making their third tournament appearance, will find out their opponent on the selection show that airs Monday, May 5, at 10:30 a.m. onÂ
ncaa.com.
"We're excited. It's a new opportunity for us to reset and keep moving forward," Pieri said.
Junior attacker
Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central HS) led Hope's attack with a record performance that included a career-high eight goals and three assists for an 11-point night, tying the school record for points in a game originally set by Maddie Ferguson against Siena Heights on April 16, 2013.
Brown also tied the MIAA tournament single-game record for most points, set by Adrian College's Olivia Duncan against Albion College in May 2013.
In addition, Brown broke her own school record of 65 goals from a year ago. Brown now has 69 goals this season and 188 for her career, just eight away from the career record of 196 set by 2024 Hope graduate
Elena Salazar.
"I think our offense just played as a unit really well today," Brown said. "I think we have such an unselfish group, that it doesn't matter who is at the front end or the back end of any plays. We all are comfortable in our roles. Even if I was the one finishing tonight, there were so many people that were giving me the ball … it was just a great team performance."
Eight different players scored for the Flying Dutch as they matched their school record for most goals in an MIAA tournament game for the second time this week. They scored 21 goals in a semifinal win over Adrian Tuesday and 21 in a 2023 semifinal victory over Calvin.
Julia Brown scored twice and set up goals by senior attacker
Juli Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana / Mishawaka Penn) and senior attacker
Kerrigan Brown (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt) as Hope took an 8-4 lead after the first quarter. Kirkpatrick and freshman midfielder
Elliana Hillard (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt) also scored twice in the first 15 minutes.
In the second quarter,
Julia Brown ripped off three goals in a span of a 2 minutes, 38 seconds, and
Kerrigan Brown and Kirkpatrick also scored as the Flying Dutch took a 13-5 halftime lead.
Hope continued to push the pace in the second half, scoring eight goals while holding the Thunder scoreless. On multiple occasions, the Flying Dutch would cause a Trine turnover at one end and quickly turn it into a goal in transition.
"We [like to] push the fast break. We practice it all the time, pushing the ball up the field as fast as we can and get an easy goal," Pieri said.
Hope went over the 20-goal mark for the fourth straight game and fifth time this season. The Flying Dutch have outscored their opponents 85-28 over the last four games.
Besides
Julia Brown's 11-point performance, Hope had plenty of other offensive standouts. Kirkpatrick scored four goals, while
Kerrigan Brown added three goals and three assists, and Hillard had two goals and an assist
Other goal-scorers for the Flying Dutch were junior midfielder
Caleigh Randall (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt), junior midfielder
Stella Bottum (Alto, Michigan / Caledonia), freshman midfielder
Annie Kipling (Spring Lake, Michigan / Spring Lake) and freshman attacker
Madison Pyle (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford).
"We had a great team win. Everybody had to do their job tonight and we did," Pieri said. "We came out really hot, which was awesome. Trine is definitely a good opponent, but we did a good job of putting it all together today."
