No. 34 Women's Tennis Superior in NCAA Tournament First-Round Victory

Hope advances to face No. 18 Gustavus Adolphus in the second round on Friday in Chicago

The 34th-ranked Hope College women's tennis team proved superior to start the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Flying Dutch won their first-round match, 4-0, against the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference champion University of Wisconsin-Superior on Thursday at the University of Chicago.

Hope (19-6 overall) advanced to face No. 18 Gustavus Adolphus College (Minnesota) in the second round on Friday, May 9, at 10 a.m. Central. The winner advances to the regional final on Saturday, May 10, at noon Central.

The MIAA champions dominated play against Wisconsin-Superior, winning 12 of 14 possible doubles points to earn the match's first point.

In singles play, Hope did not drop a set, taking 36 of 37 possible points.

Junior Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township HS) clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.

"The match we played today was more about playing as clean as we could," head coach Austin Hunt said. "We didn't have too much of a massive talk. We knew we had to take care of business and get to the next round."

The Flying Dutch earned a rematch with Gustavus Adolphus, which drew a first-round bye. The Flying Dutch lost the earlier meeting, 5-2, on April 4 at the Midwest Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin. Since then, Hope has reeled off a 10-match winning streak.
