No. 3 Volleyball Opens Season with Emphatic Victory

The third-ranked Hope College volleyball team delivered a statement win in its home opener Friday night.

With several new faces in the lineup, the Flying Dutch erupted early and often for a 25-15, 25-15, 25-17 victory against Ohio Northern University at DeVos Fieldhouse.

"I think we did a really nice job of passing, and off of serve and receive. That created a lot of options to be able to spread the load around," head coach Becky Schmidt said.

Three of Hope's top five hitters were new to the rotation. The Flying Dutch graduated six seniors, including three AVCA All-America honorees, after reaching the national semifinals for the second consecutive season.

"I love the way these players stepped into this moment and really played with a lot of joy and a lot of grit to be able to handle these moments," Schmidt said. "I'm super proud of them and thankful that we have people of such great character on our team."

Senior Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township HS) led Hope with 13 kills.

Junior Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven HS) and sophomore Olivia Wyma each had eight kills. Wyma also finished the match with a .727 hitting percentage.

Seniors Ella Contant (Elmhurst, Illinois / York Community HS) and Kate Luurtsema (Alto, Michigan / South Christian HS) added seven and six kills, respectively.

Senior Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline HS) recorded 36 assists.

Junior defensive specialist Kathryn Oates (Liberty Township, Ohio / Cincinnati Christian HS) had 12 digs and led Hope with three aces.

Hope returns to DeVos Fieldhouse at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, for a single match against Concordia University (Wis.).

In Saturday's opener, Ohio Northern will face Concordia at 11 a.m.

Single-game tickets and fall family passes are on sale through the Hope College Ticket Office, 100 East 8th Street. Tickets can be purchased online at tickets.hope.edu, by phone at (616) 395-7890 or in person at either the ticket office during regular business hours or at the door 1 hour prior to match time. Fall family passes cost $30 per game and include tickets for as many as two adults and all children living in a household. For a limited time, purchase five fall family passes for $100.
