Men's Tennis Wins Two Flights at Season-Opening Tournament

The Hope College men's tennis team advanced to the finals in four flights and won two of them at its season-opening tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The doubles teams of junior Cooper Nugent (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) and junior Alec Maynard (Northville, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central), and sophomores Blake Smith (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm) and Karsten Patel (Birmingham, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm) both emerged victorious.

Nugent and Maynard won Draw A in doubles by winning four times, including a 6-2 victory against Adrian's Michael Mascarin and Luca Coutinho in the finals.

In Draw B, Smith and Patel took first place by winning three matches, including a 6-4 decision against Calvin's Caleb Bartels and Mario Neto in the finals.

Junior Ned Curley (Plymouth, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) placed second in the Draw A singles after winning three times before losing, 8-3, to Kalamazoo College's Ned Cameron Crosby.

Maynard also finished runner-up in Draw C singles play, winning three matches before falling, 8-6, to Julie Remeau of NCAA Division II Roosevelt University (Illinois).

Hope's next match is Saturday, Sept. 20, at 4 p.m. vs. Goshen College (Indiana) at VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts.
