Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Alan Babbitt

Men's Soccer Plays Chicago to a Draw

The Hope College men's soccer team played the University of Chicago to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday on the road.

The tie extended the Flying Dutchmen's unbeaten streak on the season to three games.

Head coach David Blahnik said it was a great game his team can learn from.

"You can describe this game as a tale of two halves. They were more deserving of winning at halftime. We needed a few guys to step up and execute a bit more, and you saw a completely different side of us in the second half," Blahnik said. "It was a team we were proud to see. We need to string more halves like that together against the best teams in the country."

The Flying Dutchmen (3-3-1) next play against the preseason favorite in the Presidents Athletic Conference, Grove City College (Pennsylvania), on Friday, Sept. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The game is part of the Hope Athletics Orange and Blue Weekend on campus that includes home games on Saturday, Sept. 20, for football at 1 p.m. and women's soccer at 1 p.m. Purchase an $18 Orange and Blue Weekend pass that covers admission to all three games. Single-game tickets are also available through the Hope College Ticket Office online or at the gate.

Hope pulled even with 1 minute, 47 seconds remaining after Chicago (2-1-3) was credited with an own goal. The Maroons failed to clear a shot from junior Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph).

"It was an insanely aggressive shot from Seth on frame that we needed," Blahnik said.

The Flying Dutchmen had been trying to score since a foul called into the box gave Chicago a penalty kick that Drew Kanellos converted.

Both teams finished with nine shots. Sophomore Daniel Morgan (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) made two saves for Hope.

"We were defending well in the first half, but a lot of their opportunities were coming from our inability to keep possession," Blahnik said. "Our ability in the second half to play our possession game took pressure off our defense and allowed them to get involved in the attack. That was the difference in the game."

Hope is now unbeaten in the last three games against Chicago, with two wins and a tie.
