18th-Ranked Volleyball Finishes Trip Out East on Five-Match Winning Streak

The 18th-ranked Hope College volleyball team capped off a dominant weekend in Washington, D.C. with two more wins on Saturday.

The Flying Dutch pushed their win streak to five matches by opening the day with a gritty 3-1 victory over Franklin and Marshall University (Pennsylvania), 19-25, 25-15, 28-26, 25-23), and closing it by sweeping Whittier College (California) in three sets sets, 25-19, 28-26, 25-23, at Gallaudet University's Worthington Classic.

Hope (9-4 overall) emerged from a stretch of 11 matches away from home with seven wins in 11 tries.

Senior setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) was named Tournament MVP, while teammate and sophomore middle hitter Olivia Wyma (Hartland, Wisconsin / Arrowhead) joined Lee on the all-tournament team.

The Flying Dutch dropped the first set against Franklin and Marshall but responded with a blistering .433 hitting percentage in the second set and never looked back. 

Wyma led the charge with 17 kills and five blocks. Freshman Kiera Morrison (Bartlett, Illinois / Wheaton Academy) added 13 kills. 

Senior Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township) filled the stat sheet with 11 kills, five aces, three assists and 10 digs. 

Lee orchestrated the offense with 47 assists and 12 digs. Junior Kathryn Oates (Liberty Township, Ohio / Cincinnati Christian) anchored the back row with 21 digs.

Against Whittier, Wyma led the attack with 11 kills. Junior Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) added 10 kills and five blocks at the net.

Morrison contributed 10 kills and two aces, and freshman Amelia Gagnon (Belmont, Michigan / Grand Rapids West Catholic) added energy from the service line with two aces and eight digs. 

Lee continued her steady play with 39 assists and 8 digs, and Oates came away with 10 digs against the Poets. 

Hope heads home for the first home match since August 30, as the Flying Dutch host 11th-ranked Marietta College on Friday, Sept. 2,6 at 7 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse and 10th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday, Sept 27, at 1:30 p.m.
