Brendan Cargill, Men's Basketball Heat Up vs. Albion, Keep Share of MIAA Lead

Freshman guard Brendan Cargill passed out appreciations to his Hope College men's basketball teammates following a career night at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The short-handed Flying Dutchmen welcomed his superb play, which keyed a second-half surge to a 95-72 victory against Albion College on Wednesday and a share of first place in the MIAA standings.

Cargill (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) poured in a career-high eight 3-pointers and 30 points on a night when the college began its weeklong celebration of the DeVos Fieldhouse's 20th anniversary, highlighting memorable moments on campus.

The sensational shooting was needed, helping Hope overcome the absence of injured All-MIAA forward Parker Hovey. The victory improved the Flying Dutchmen to 11-7 overall and 6-1 in MIAA play, tied with The University of Olivet after the Comets won a first-place showdown at Calvin University, 76-69, later in the evening.

"He said to his teammates in the locker room that he appreciates this team because they trust him and believe in him," head coach Greg Mitchell said. "How many freshmen have that joy to play with older guys who empower him to be himself? That was a big part. He hit some big shots. We had some actions for him, and he delivered."

Cargill scored 20 points after halftime, sparking a 53-point second-half outburst for the Orange and Blue. Hope held a narrow 42-40 lead at intermission following a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining by junior forward Simon Neuhaus (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids).

The Flying Dutchmen opened the first 3 minutes, 20 seconds of the second half on a 13-3 run.

Cargill buried two 3-pointers during the decisive stretch. Sophomore forward Orion Yant (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland West) delivered seven of his career-high 14 points between Cargill's baskets.

Albion (10-8, 3-4 MIAA) never closed the gap to fewer than nine points. The Britons were led by 16 points from forward Kameron Mayes.

Mitchell said he challenged his team to seize control at the start of the second half.

"In big games, that determines so much," Mitchell said. "I told them to dial in and trust our offense. They made some adjustments defensively, and we had to go back to our normal system. We trusted each other. I thought the ball moved really well. Everybody contributed, and that's what we needed today."

Senior guard Marcus Wourman (Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing) added 12 points and three assists, sharing team-high assist honors with Cargill and Neuhaus.

Sophomore guard Jared Ryg (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey) scored a career-best nine points. Senior guard Justice Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) and sophomore forward Kyle Blauch (Boulder, Colorado / Boulder) chipped in eight points apiece.

The Flying Dutchmen shot season bests of 61.8% from the field and 50.0% from 3-point range.

Hope also made a season-high 11 3-pointers and tied its season best with 19 assists. The 95 points tied for the second most this season.

Hope resumes MIAA play Saturday, Jan. 31, at 3 p.m. at Adrian College. The Flying Dutchmen will play five of their final seven regular-season games on the road.
