Nationally-Ranked Women's Basketball Falls at Albion in OT

The nationally ranked Hope College women's basketball team missed a chance to win in regulation Wednesday night and eventually fell at Albion College, 60-54, in overtime.

The loss dropped the Flying Dutch to 16-3 overall and 1 1/2 games out of first place in the MIAA standings with a 9-2 league record.


Hope aims to rebound Saturday, Jan. 31, at 3 p.m. when the Flying Dutch host Adrian College on Senior Day. The Flying Dutch also will celebrate the 20th anniversary of DeVos Fieldhouse and welcome the 2006 national championship team back to campus.


It was Hope's second consecutive overtime game. The Flying Dutch won at Calvin, 57-55, on Saturday.


Both teams held leads 10 times and were tied 13 times.


Albion's Ava Guilford kept the score even at 52-52 at the end of regulation by blocking a go-ahead layup attempt from junior guard Terin Maynard (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Jenison) along the baseline.


The Britons (14-5, 7-3 MIAA) then outscored Hope 8-2 during the extra five-minute period.


The Flying Dutch struggled shooting throughout the game, finishing at 29.9% from the field (20 of 67), 21.7% from 3-point range (5 of 23) and 56.3% from the foul line (9 of 16).


Sophomores Maddie Petroelje (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) and Leah Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt) both recorded double-doubles for Hope.


Petroelje totaled a team-best 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Richards added 10 points and 10 rebounds.


Albion's Meghan Trewhella topped all scorers with 24 points. Guilford added 19.
