Nationally-Ranked Women's Basketball Dominates Adrian, Caps Day of Celebration

The nationally-ranked Hope College women's basketball team punctuated a day with already so much to celebrate with a dominating 88-46 victory against Adrian College on Saturday.

The Flying Dutch recognized three seniors before tipoff, jumped to a commanding 39-14 halftime lead and honored their 2006 national championship team at halftime as well as the 20th anniversary of DeVos Fieldhouse.

Hope (No. 7 WBCA/No. 9 D3hoops) rebounded from an overtime loss at Albion College on Wednesday, improving to a 17-3 overall and 10-2 in MIAA play.

Head coach Brian Morehouse was pleased with his team's performance on both ends of the court.

"I thought we defended pretty well to start the game. We held them to 14 points in the first half. It was a really good defensive effort," Morehouse said. "We moved the ball and shared the ball - 18 assists is a great stat."

Sophomore guard Anna Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) led the Orange and Blue, setting season-highs with 18 points, seven made field goals and four made 3-pointers.

Richards also grabbed six rebounds, sharing team-high honors with junior Grayson Guy (Petoskey, Michigan / Petoskey).

Fifteen different Flying Dutch scored, including senior Lauren Leach (Angola, Indiana / Angola), who chipped in a season-high nine points.

Hope's 18 assists came from 10 different players. Freshman Josie DeSmit (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) dished out a team-best four.

The Flying Dutch shot 48.5% from the field and sank 13 3-pointers, one of their season-best against Olivet on Jan. 10.

Morehouse thanked "a great group of seniors) in Leach, forward Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) and Lily Miller (Norton Shores, Michigan / Mona Shores).

"Lily came in as a transfer sophomore and immediately fit in with this group. She puts everyone at ease and is a great teammate," Morehouse said. "Lauren is a two-year captain and a glue kid for us both on the court and in the locker room. Syd is a four-year player, a dominant player offensively for us. She can score in a million different ways."

Hope's next game is Saturday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m. at Alma College.
