The Hope College men's basketball team battled fourth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis before falling, 72-65, in the opening round of the Glenn Van Wieren Classic on Friday at DeVos Fieldhouse.
The second annual, two-day tournament honors the Flying Dutchmen's legendary coach and 1964 graduate. Van Wieren retired at the conclusion of the 2009-10 season, leading the Flying Dutchmen over 33 seasons to a 669-219 overall record.
On Saturday, Jan. 3, Hope (5-5) will face 10-2 Muskingum University (Ohio), which lost to The University of Olivet, 87-70, in Friday's opener. Olivet (3-7) will face WashU (9-1) for the championship at noon. The Flying Dutchmen will face Muskingum at 2 p.m.

Parker Hovey (Shelby, Michigan / Hart) topped all scorers with 22 points and grabbed six rebounds.Â
Senior guard
Marcus Wourman (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing) chipped in 13 points and six rebounds. Freshman guard
Avery Sanchez (Turlock, California / John H. Pitman) contributed 12 points.
Sophomore center
Orion Yant (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland West) pulled down a career-best 10 rebounds.
WashUÂ built a 43-33 halftime lead after finishing the half on a 14-7 run over the final 4 minutes, 40 seconds.
Five Bears finished in double figures, led by Connor May's 14 points.
