Three double-digit scorers weren't enough to keep the Hope College women's basketball team from dropping its first showdown of the season against Trine University on Wednesday.
The ninth-ranked Flying Dutch lost at Trine, 67-61, snapping an eight-game winning streak.
Hope fell to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in MIAA play. The Thunder (10-3 overall) seized sole possession of first place in the league standings.
The Flying Dutch return to action Saturday, Jan. 10, at 3 p.m. at home against the University of Olivet. The game is Poster Day, with postgame autographs scheduled.
Sophomore
Maddie Petroelje (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) led Hope with 15 points. Junior
Terin Maynard (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Jenison) added 14 points and a team-best four assists, while senior
Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) finished with 13 points and a game-high three blocks.
The game featured 11 lead changes and 11 ties.
Hope led 42-41 after the third quarter and 53-52 after sophomore
Leah Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / South Christian) split a pair of free throws with 4:11 remaining.
Trine's Annika Southworth responded by sinking her third 3-pointer of the quarter to give the Thunder the lead for good.
Southworth scored 13 of her 17 points in Trine's 26-point fourth quarter. Teammate Madison Wagner added eight of her game-high 21 points in the final 10 minutes.
Hope and Trine will meet again in the regular-season finale Saturday, Feb. 21, at 3 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse.
