Seth Walters' Equalizer Lifts Men's Soccer to Draw At Adrian

Senior forward Seth Walters — who was named the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Forward of the Month on Friday — netted a late second-half equalizer as the Hope College men's soccer team fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Adrian College on Saturday afternoon at Docking Stadium.

With the result, Hope moved to 7-1-3 overall and 0-0-2 in MIAA conference play, while the hosting Bulldogs shifted to 4-5-2 overall and 0-1-1 in league action.

The Flying Dutch dictated the tempo early on, controlling much of the first half by outshooting Adrian 8-3 and forcing three corner kick opportunities. However, Adrian goalkeeper Eli Sizemore held firm in net, stopping all five of Hope's shots on goal during the opening 45 minutes to keep the game scoreless at halftime.

The match remained deadlocked through the early stages of the second half until Adrian broke through in the 75th minute on a Kyle Peterson goal to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Hope produced a rapid response less than three minutes later. In the 78th minute, junior Jackson Mindling (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) set up Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph), who slotted home his team-leading 10th goal of the season to bring the Hope level at 1-1.

Adrian made a aggressive push to regain the lead in the final ten minutes, putting dangerous attempts on frame senior goalkeeper Cooper Hutt (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) came up with three clutch saves to secure the road draw.

Hope held the statistical edge throughout the match, outshooting Adrian 17-11 overall and holding a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.  Walters spearheaded the Flying Dutch's attacking front, putting five of his game-high six shots on target, while Mindling and senior Josh Weigel (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central) each chipped in three shots. In goal, Hutt went the full 90 minutes and made four saves.

The Flying Dutch return home to Van Andel Soccer Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 13, when they host Trine University in MIAA play at 7 p.m.
