Volleyball Upsets No. 1 Wisconsin-Oshkosh to Cap 2-0 Day

In a performance defined as much by poise as power, the Hope College volleyball team authored one of the biggest upsets of the Division III season on Saturday, taking down top-ranked and defending national champion Wisconsin-Oshkosh in a five-set epic in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

The signature victory completed a flawless 2-0 day at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire tournament for the Flying Dutch (13-6, 2-0 MIAA). Hope kicked off their afternoon by sweeping Wisconsin-Superior in straight sets before returning to the floor to hand No. 1 Oshkosh just its second loss of the season.

"Overall, I think this team made tremendous progress in finding their identity this weekend," said head coach Becky Schmidt. "There were plenty of times we could have backed down today and didn't. We still have a lot of work to do, but this team learned how much heart they have and what they are capable of when they play with it."

Riding a seven-game winning streak and boasting an 18-1 record, Oshkosh's Titans presented a formidable challenge, but the Blue and Orange met the moment with steady, composure-driven resolve. From the opening serve, the match developed into a tense, high-level battle.

Hope matched Oshkosh point for point, pushing the nation's top team well past the standard mark before the Titans secured a hard-fought 28-26 opening frame.  Undeterred by the close loss, the Flying Dutch responded in set two. Maintaining their focus, Hope answered every Titan run to claim a 26-24 set win and level the match.

Oshkosh showcased its championship pedigree in the third set, pulling away for a 25-22 victory to regain the lead. Hope locked in in the fourth set defensively at the net and sustained long rallies with disciplined backline play. In another tight, down-to-the-wire finish, Hope earned a 26-24 set victory to force a deciding fifth set.

In the final race to 15 points, Hope executed with precision. The Flying Dutch opened up a lead and stood firm in the closing moments. With a clean finish, Hope sealed a memorable 15-12 set win, completing the upset and snapping Oshkosh's win streak.

Following the upset, Schmidt praised her squad's tactical execution and collective spirit.

"So pleased with our defensive aggressiveness against a very good team," Schmidt said. "We found ways to push and pull their defenders to keep them guessing. Brooke Hehl did a great job of facilitating success from a number of different hitters, and the bench brought so much energy. This was truly a team win."

Junior Angie Butler (Novi, Michigan / Mercy HS) guided the offense with a team-high 16 kills, while senior Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) delivered an outstanding performance at the net with 15 kills and 8 blocks.

Freshman Maddie Ostrander (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) provided 11 kills and 5 blocks, and sophomore Kiera Morrison (Bartlett, Illinois / Wheaton Academy) contributed 10 kills alongside 3 service aces.

Sophomore Brooke Hehl (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Lutheran Northwest) distributed the attack effectively with 58 assists to go with 12 digs.

Defensively, senior Kathryn Oates (Liberty Township, Ohio / Cincinnati Christian) anchored the backline with a game-high 25 digs, while sophomore Amelia Gagnon (Belmont, Michigan / Grand Rapids West Catholic) added 18 digs.

Hours before their five-set triumph, Hope College opened its Saturday schedule with an efficient, steady performance against Wisconsin-Superior. The Flying Dutch worked through a competitive opening frame, holding off a late Yellowjacket push to claim the set 25-22.

With the opening set in hand, Hope established a smooth, commanding rhythm. The Flying Dutch controlled the tempo at the net and minimized unforced errors to build an insurmountable lead. Hope pulled away cleanly in the second set for a 25-14 win, before maintaining that steady control in set three to finish the sweep 25-12.

Butler and sophomore Kate VanderHill (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) balanced the attack with 9 kills each, with VanderHill hitting an efficient .389.

Burbridge registered 8 kills and 5 blocks (.316 hitting percentage), while Ostrander added 6 kills (.385 hitting percentage) and 2 blocks.

Hehl orchestrated the game plan with 26 assists and 8 digs, Oates recorded a team-leading 14 digs, and Gagnon and sophomore Jillian Collins (Northville, Michigan / Mercy) each served 3 aces.

Hope returns home and to league play, welcoming The University of Olivet to DeVos Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
