Men’s Soccer Edged by Calvin on Last-Second Shot

It was a stunning finish on a windy fall night at Van Andel Soccer Stadium, befitting of The Rivalry. Unfortunately for the Hope College men's soccer team, the last-second heroics belonged to the other side.

No. 11-ranked Calvin University miraculously pulled out a 3-2, come-from-behind victory on Friday, scoring twice over the final 8 minutes and 8 seconds, including the game-winner with no time remaining.

"Obviously, it's a difficult result to swallow just because the whole team, we're competitive and expect to win every game, even more so because it is a rivalry game," head coach David Blahnik said after his team fell to 8-2-3 overall and 1-1-2 in MIAA play. "Although we could have done a few things technically better, I'm proud of how our guys competed and responded to the highs and lows of the season. We're still in the middle of the season and have a lot more games left. The ones at the end of the season are the ones that matter the most."

The Flying Dutch will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Oct, 21, at 4 p.m. when they play at The University of Olivet.

Calvin's Jake Ziolo proved the hero for the Knights, who improved to 11-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in MIAA games.

The junior took a short feed from teammate Hans Pruis at the far corner of the penalty area and blasted a high kick into a stiff southerly wind. The ball hung up but tucked into the upper left corner of the goal as the final buzzer sounded.

After huddling for a minute, officials ruled the ball crossed the goal line in time, giving Ziolo his second goal of the season.

In the 82nd minute, the Knights evened the score at 2-2 when Zac Brooks pounced on a rebound in front of the Hope goal for his third goal of the season.

Hope held a 2-1 lead for 13-plus minutes after a header from senior midfielder Josh Weigel (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central) snapped a tie score. Weigel's second goal of the season came off a throw-in from sophomore Jack Lowman  (Novi, Michigan / Northville) that senior Caden Chenlo (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) headed to Weigel.

After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Flying Dutch quickly drew even when Lowman knocked in a corner kick from sophomore Rory Cobb (Caledonia, Michigan / Caledonia) 5 ½ minutes into the second half.
