Women’s Soccer Shuts Out and Ties No. 11 Calvin on One Big Weekend

The Hope College women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with 11th-ranked rival Calvin University on Saturday during One Big Weekend on campus, holding the Knights scoreless as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

The tie in front of more than 1,100 fans at Van Andel Soccer Stadium left the Flying Dutch in a second-place tie with the Knights in the MIAA standings at 4-0-1 in conference play. Kalamazoo College, which has not played either Hope or Calvin yet, is 5-0.

The Flying Dutch are now 8-3-2 on the season, while Calvin is 11-1-1. Hope returns to action Tuesday, October 20 at Van Andel Stadium against The University of Olivet. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

"Obviously it was not the result we wanted," head coach Holly Van Noord said. "Calvin is definitely a high-ranked team, a high-quality opponent. I thought it was impressive for our team playing 90 minutes of mentally disciplined soccer through the match and controlling the controllables. I am very proud of them."

The Knights carried the play in the first half, outshooting Hope 8-4 over the first 45 minutes and generating three corner kicks to one for the Flying Dutch. Senior goalkeeper Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) made three saves for Hope in the half.

During the second half, Hope had several scoring opportunities while limiting Calvin's attack. The Flying Dutch held the Knights to a single shot over the final 45 minutes of the game. Hope outshot Calvin 4-1 in the second half. Senior forward Halle Barnard (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) led the offense with three shots.

Feenstra picked up her fifth shutout of the season and 14th of her career, lowering her goals-against average on the season to 0.77.

"We played one of our best games as a backline as a team," Van Noord said. "We did a great job being organized and taking away Calvin's strength. It helped us in the flow of the game."
