Volleyball Drops MIAA Showdown to No. 12 Calvin

Senior middle hitter Kamryn Burbridge totaled 17 kills and a season-high nine blocks for the Hope College volleyball team in a four-set loss at 12th-ranked Calvin University on Wednesday.

Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) hit a team-best .359 clip during the 24-26, 25-21, 25-21, 25-18 defeat in front of a Van Noord Arena crowd of 2,248.

The Flying Dutch dropped to 15-7 overall and 4-1 in MIAA play. Calvin (17-2, 4-0 MIAA) moved into a first-place tie with Albion College; Calvin hosts Albion on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 5 p.m., while Hope is on a bye.

Kills from junior outside hitter Angie Butler (Novi, Michigan / Mercy) closed out the first set in The Rivalry's 155th meeting. Butler finished with 11 kills. 

Calvin took the lead for good in the second with a five-point run that resulted in a 19-15 lead for the Knights. In the third set, Calvin scored eight of nine points to grab a 13-6 lead and never trailed. The Knights sealed the match by netting eight of the fourth set's final 10 points. Sarah Bradley's game-high 25 kills topped Calvin.

Senior Kathryn Oates (Liberty Township, Ohio / Cincinnati Christian) recorded 24 digs for the Flying Dutch.

Sophomore setter Brooke Hehl (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Lutheran Northwest) tallied 40 assists.

Hope returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m. Central at the No. 18 University of Chicago.
