Set against an autumn backdrop on a warm Wednesday afternoon at Van Andel Soccer Stadium, the Hope College women's soccer team brought a regular season of relentless intent to its triumphant peak.
The Flying Dutch (11-3-2, 7-0-1 MIAA) took command from the opening whistle, delivering a clinical 2–0 shutout over Kalamazoo College to capture a share of their eighth league championship. This win clinched the first MIAA title since 2018 and the first for head coach Holly Van Noord in her three-year tenure. Hope shared first place with Calivin University.
"We're really proud as a coaching staff with this group, which has worked so hard," Van Noord said. "They put in the work on and off the field, pouring into each other, which makes the title extra sweet."
The win also secures Hope a bye in the first round of the MIAA Tournament and will host a semifinal round on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
From the opening whistle, Hope asserted control across the pitch, piling pressure on the Hornets' back line with seven early corner kicks. The breakthrough arrived in spectacular fashion in the 11th minute when junior defender Mia Hesley (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central HS) picked up a delivery from sophomore Jessica Reyes (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Oakland Christian) and launched a brilliant strike from nearly 35 yards out.
Hesley's first goal of the season provided a jolt, Van Noord said.
"It energized us. We knew Kalamazoo was going to give their best; they're a great team and play tough. There was a lot to play for on both sides," Van Noord said. "The first goal takes a little bit of the pressure off and adds a level of trust that we're doing is working. We did a great job of going at them and being aggressive."
The long-range blast settled straight into the top center of the net, handing the Flying Dutch a 1–0 lead they would not relinquish.
Coming out of halftime, Hope wasted no time slamming the door further. Just over two minutes into the second half, senior Halle Barnard (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) picked up possession along the right flank and whipped a precision cross into the box, finding freshman Avery Plummer (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West), who slotted it home to double the advantage.
Kalamazoo (12-4-1, 6-2-0 MIAA) pressed back late in an effort to alter the script, putting 10 shots on frame across the second half.
However, goalkeeper senior Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) and the Hope defensive wall stood firm, anchored by isx key saves from Feenstra to secure the season's eighth shutout.
