Volleyball Welcomes Back Standout Olivia Wyma, Sweeps Adrian

Moments after Hope College middle hitter Olivia Wyma entered the volleyball game for the first time this season, an errant opposing dig floated back to her at the net.

The 6-foot-4 junior quickly put down an easy third-set kill against Adrian College, drawing a loud ovation from Flying Dutch teammates and fans who understood her long and challenging journey back from injury.

The moment during Wednesday's 25-16, 25-19, 25-11 victory at DeVos Fieldhouse meant more than just a single point.

"That was a little God wink, saying 'Hey here, you go'," head coach Becky Schmidt said of Wyma, an American Volleyball Coaches Association Honorable Mention All-America and All-MIAA selection last season.

"Olivia has worked incredibly hard. To think she played last season on a torn ACL, then got it fixed right away after the season, then rehabbed like crazy, it's amazing. She has stayed such an incredibly important part of this team even when she was unable to play. She's a big part of the heart of this team."

Wyma was one of 11 Flying Dutch who contributed kills.

Senior middle hitter Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) spearheaded the attack with a game-high 12 kills on a .409 hitting average.

Freshman middle hitter Maddie Ostrander (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) chipped in 10 kills at a team-best. 592 clip.

Junior outside hitter Angie Butler (Novi, Michigan / Mercy) recorded nine kills.

Sophomore setter Brooke Hehl (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Lutheran Northwest) collected 36 assists.

The Flying Dutch next heads to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire this weekend to play in a two-day tournament. Hope will face top-ranked Eau Claire on Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. Central, the University of Wisconsin Superior on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. Central, and third-ranked University of Wisconsin Oshkosh on Saturday at noon Central.
