Men’s Basketball Cleans Up On The Glass, Powers Past Anderson in Opener

Center Kyle Blauch and his Hope College men's basketball teammates answered a question they had for themselves in Friday's season opener at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The Flying Dutch snatched a 90-63 victory against Anderson University by grabbing a plus-29 advantage on the glass, led by Blauch's career-high 13 rebounds.

"We played really, really hard. It wasn't super clean, but we rebounded the heck out of it," head coach Greg Mitchell said. "Plus-29 on the glass … that's probably our biggest concern. 'Are we going to be able to rebound?' These guys listened. They were high-pointing the rebounds. I was most pleased about that. Free balls are possessions, and we're trying to win the possession battle."

Fifteen different members of the Orange and Blue grabbed at least one rebound for a total of 58. Six grabbed at least one offensive rebound for a total of 17, doubling up the Ravens in that category. Hope finished with 21 second-chance points to Anderson's nine.

Junior forward Orion Yant (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland West) grabbed nine rebounds to go along with 14 points.

Hope put three more in double figures for scoring. Sophomore guard Brendan Cargill (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) netted a game-high 20 points, including the Flying Dutch's first seven points. Cargill also tracked down four boards.

Sophomore guard Avery Sanchez (Torlock, California / John H. Pitman) chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.

Sophomore center Sean Wesolek (Bay City, Michigan / John Glenn) contributed 10 points and three rebounds off the bench.

Anderson (0-1) received a team-high 16 points from guard Nolan Swan. The Ravens shot 32.3% from the field.

The Flying Dutch's next game is Saturday, Nov. 7, at 5 p.m. against Franklin College, which plays in the same Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference as Anderson.
