Men's Basketball Outlasts Olivet, Seizes Share of MIAA Lead on Senior Day

Hope also claims the 1,750th victory in program history

There was plenty to love about Valentine's Day at DeVos Fieldhouse — if you cheered for the Orange and Blue.

The Flying Dutchmen clawed their way back into a share of the MIAA lead with one week remaining on Saturday by claiming a 68-64, come-from-behind victory against first-place The University of Olivet.

The 1,750th victory in program history brought the Flying Dutchmen (15-8, 10-2 MIAA) even with Olivet with two games remaining. Both teams lead third-place Trine University by one game and fourth-place Calvin University by two. Hope next plays at Albion College on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m.

On Senior Day, all four seniors played. Senior guard Justice Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) sank two clinching free throws with six seconds remaining.

Senior guard Marcus Wourman (Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing) became the 46th Hope student-athlete to score 1,000 career points during his collegiate career.

Senior guard Sam Carlson (Superior, Colorado / Monarch) and Deven Marathe (Cincinnati, Ohio / Turpin) both started.

Hope overcame a 40-33 halftime deficit and a 48% struggle at the foul line (12-25).

The Orange and Blue used an 11-1 run midway through the second half to grab a 54-46 lead. Olivet (13-10, 10-2 MIAA) rallied and earned one-point leads twice before the Flying Dutchmen went ahead for good at 62-60 when junior forward Parker Hovey (Shelby, Michigan / Hart) buried two free throws with 3:30 remaining.

Hope limited the Comets to 33.3% second-half field-goal shooting and just one 3-pointer after seven during the opening 20 minutes.

Up three with eight seconds remaining, the Flying Dutchmen fouled Shenker and split his attempts, missing the second. Mims skied for the rebound and was fouled, sending him to the line to put Olivet away and secure an important sweep of the season series. Head-to-head records could factor into seeding for the upcoming MIAA Tournament.

Sophomore center Orion Yant (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland West) topped the Orange and Blue with 16 points on 80% field-goal shooting.

Hovey recorded a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Carter Bishop (Holt, Michigan / Holt) poured in a career-high 10 points.

Olivet put three in double figures, including guard Nathan Richardson with 16 and center Connor Schipper with 15.
