On a cold, windy afternoon at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, the Hope College baseball team opened its 2026 baseball season on Friday in Westfield, Indiana. Despite outhitting the Student Princes 13–9, and putting together multiple scoring innings, the Flying Dutchmen fell 8-6 to Heidelberg University in the season opener.
The Flying Dutchmen led early and rallied late, but Heidelberg's two-run top of the ninth inning proved to be the difference.
Hope struck first in the bottom of the opening inning when sophomore Granden Kinnie (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm HS) doubled to right center to score sophomore Corbin Bennetts (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison).
The Flying Dutchmen added another run in the third after senior Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton) tripled and scored on a single from sophomore Colton Kinnie (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm).
Their biggest surge came in the sixth, when Hope pieced together four hits, including a double from sophomore Nick Verduzco (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic Prep) to push across three runs and briefly take a 5–4 lead .
Hope tied the game again in the seventh on senior Charlie Saul's RBI single, but Heidelberg answered with two runs in the ninth to secure the win.
Hope's offense was steady throughout the lineup, producing 13 hits on the day.
Bennetts finished with two hits, one run, and an RBI, including a leadoff single that set up Hope's first run .
Granden Kinnie delivered two hits and two RBIs.
Colton Kinnie added two hits, a walk, and an RBI, while Saul, a senior from Batavia, Illinois (Batavia) contributed two hits and two RBIs.
Senior Brendan Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic) also recorded two hits, including a double in the second inning.
On the mound, junior Jake Coulter (West Bloomfield, Michigan / Birmingham Brother Rice) worked 5.0 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Hope plays two more times in Indiana on Saturday, Feb. 21: 11 a.m. against Ripon College (Wisconsin) and 2 p.m. against Marian University (Wisconin).
