Women's Lacrosse Stuns Grove City with Late Winter Blast

Hope scores twice in the last 46 seconds, wins snowy season opener

Ireland Brown and Caleigh Randall delivered a winter blast for the Hope College women's lacrosse team during a blustery, snowy season opener.

The two midfielders scored 32 seconds apart in the final minute of regulation to propel the Flying Dutch to a 10-9 come-from-behind victory against Presidents' Athletic Conference preseason favorite Grove City College (Pennsylvania) on Friday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Hope, the MIAA preseason favorite, overcame two fourth-quarter leads by the Wolverines.

Grove City (0-1) held a 9-8 lead for nearly six minutes before Ireland Brown (DeWitt, Michigan/DeWitt) tied the score with 46.2 seconds remaining. The sophomore beat goalkeeper Mia Gallagher stick side with a low shot inside the right post.

On the ensuing draw, senior Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Forest Hills Central) gained possession, allowing the Flying Dutch to call a timeout with 39.6 seconds left.

After Randall (Lansing, Michigan/DeWitt) traded passes with Ireland Brown and regained possession following a drop, the senior charged at an angle toward the upper left side of the goal. Randall turned and fired a shot from about eight yards out that tucked under the crossbar for the game-winning goal.

It was Randall's fifth career game-winning goal.

Randall finished with two goals, as did three teammates: Ireland Brown, Julia Brown and senior midfielder Sydney LaPrairie (Rochester, Michigan/Stoney Creek).

Sophomore attacker Kayla Reis (Westfield, Indiana/Westfield) and sophomore midfielder Megan Bushart (Caledonia, Michigan/Caledonia) also scored for Hope.

Hope played through challenging conditions that resulted in 44 turnovers between the teams.

Senior goalkeeper Samantha Smith (Westfield, Indiana/Westfield) made five saves for the Flying Dutch. Gallagher finished with seven saves.

Hope's next game is Wednesday, March 4, at 4 p.m. at Aurora University (Illinois).
