No. 11 Women's Basketball Routs Trine, Rolls into Postseason Play

Hope posts its largest victory vs. the Thunder in 12 years

The Hope College women's basketball team made the most of its second chances this week.

The 11th-ranked Flying Dutch avenged two of their three losses this season in four days, capping a satisfying stretch Saturday with a convincing 89-58 victory against nationally ranked and MIAA champion Trine University at DeVos Fieldhouse. The Thunder won the first meeting, 67-61, at home on Jan. 7.

On Wednesday, Hope defeated visiting Albion College, 80-44, after losing, 60-54, in overtime on the road on Jan. 28.

The Flying Dutch (22-3, 14-2 MIAA) could face both teams again next week as the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament.

Hope will play in the Friday, Feb. 27, 5:30 p.m., semifinal at top-seeded Trine, awaiting the winner of the Wednesday, Feb. 25, quarterfinal between third-seeded Albion and sixth-seeded Kalamazoo College. Trine will play either fourth-seeded Calvin University or fifth-seeded Alma College in the other semifinal.

Saturday, the Flying Dutch delivered one of their most efficient games of the season, shooting a season-best 54.2% from 3-point range (13 of 24) and their second-highest overall mark at 53.7% (29 of 54).

The 13 3-pointers finished one shy of a season high.

Senior forward Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan/South Christian) scored a game-high 17 points while sinking a season-high five 3-pointers in seven attempts. Vis moved within 21 points of 1,000 for her career.

Five more Flying Dutch reached double figures, including junior guard Chloe Brunsberg (Chaska, Minnesota / Southwest Christian) with 14 points and a season-high four 3s, and sophomore forward Maddie Petroelje (Hudsonville, Michigan/Hudsonville) with 13 points and three 3s.

Junior guard Terin Maynard (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Jenison), sophomore guard Anna Richards (DeWitt, Michigan/Lansing Catholic) and sophomore forward Leah Richards (DeWitt, Michigan/Lansing Catholic) chipped in 10 points apiece.

Hope snapped a 15-15 tie by outscoring the Thunder 26-10 during the second quarter. The Flying Dutch shot 70% from the field in the decisive quarter (7 of 10).

The victory broke a four-game losing streak to Trine (21-4, 15-1) and marked Hope's largest margin of victory in the series since a 90-40 home win in 2014.
