Softball's Sophie Stironek Delivers Five RBIs in Season Opener at North Park

First baseman Sophie Stironek totaled five RBIs for the Hope College softball team during a season-opening doubleheader loss at North Park University (Illinois) on Friday near Chicago.

The Flying Dutch lost the first game, 9-1, in six innings and the second game, 12-11.

Batting third, Stironek (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) went 2-for-4 with RBIs during Game 2. 

The junior capped a four-run third that put Hope ahead 6-0 by smacking an RBI triple to center. Stironek added a two-run single in the third.

Catcher Macy Verbeek (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian) delivered three hits, including an RBI double in the fourth and an RBI triple in the sixth to extend Hope's lead to 11-8.

North Park (2-0) struck for four runs in the bottom of the sixth, all unearned.

In Game 1, North Park scored nine unanswered runs after Stironek's run-scoring sacrifice.

Hope next plays on Thursday, March 5, with two games in Clermont, Florida: 10 a.m. against Concordia University (Wisconsin) and 12:30 p.m. against Allegheny College (Pennsylvania).
