Softball Completes Seven-Run Comeback, Opens Florida Trip with Two Wins

Sunshine and a full day on the diamond greeted the Hope College softball team Wednesday as the Flying Dutch opened their four-day spring break trip in Florida. By the time the sun dipped low, Hope had turned its first day in the Sunshine State into a sweep, capped by a dramatic, come-from-behind walk-off that defined the afternoon.

The Flying Dutch collected two wins in Clermont, rallying past Allegheny College, 9–8, before opening the day with a 2–0 shutout of Concordia University Wisconsin. The sweep lifted Hope to 3–2 overall as it began four straight days of spring break competition.

The second game delivered the day's biggest spark as the Flying Dutch staged a remarkable rally to close out the afternoon.

Hope found itself in an early hole, trailing 8–1 in the bottom of the third after Allegheny pushed across runs in each of the first three innings.

But the Flying Dutch refused to let the deficit define the game. Hope answered with a run later in the third and kept the pressure on, inning by inning, as the lineup pieced together timely hits and steady baserunners to chip away at the margin.

By the seventh inning, Hope had completed the comeback to pull even, and the momentum carried straight into the final swing.

The Flying Dutch pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, sealing a walk-off victory and completing an eight-run surge to claim the 9–8 win.

Hope's comeback was fueled by a balanced, high-impact offensive day across the lineup.

Junior Kenadee Schnick (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison HS) set the tone at the top of the order, reaching base three times and scoring three runs while swiping three bases.

Senior Kate DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) followed with a strong performance as well, collecting two hits, two RBI, and two stolen bases, including an RBI single in the third and another run-scoring hit in the fourth.

Junior Sophie Stironek (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) delivered the biggest swings of the afternoon, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and three RBI, highlighted by the fourth-inning triple that sent in three RBI.

Senior Gianna Kerschbaum (Baroda, Michigan / Stevensville-Lakeshore) added two hits and two RBI, driving in key runs during Hope's five-run fourth inning.

Junior Macy Verbeek (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian) provided a clutch pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh to complete the walk-off.

In the circle, Kerschbaum also steadied the game defensively in relief, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings in relief while allowing just four hits and striking out six to secure the win.

Hope opened the day with a performance built on timely offense and steady pitching.

The Flying Dutch struck in the first inning when  Schnick reached base and later scored on a sacrifice fly from DeMann, giving Hope an early 1–0 lead.

A tight pitcher's duel carried through the middle innings until Hope added insurance in the sixth.

Schnick again crossed the plate, this time on a sacrifice fly from Kerschbaum, extending the advantage to 2–0.

Junior Hailey Mellec (Commerce Township, Michigan / Walled Lake Northern) handled the bulk of the work in the circle, delivering six scoreless innings and allowing just four hits.

Schnick led the offense by scoring both runs as Hope collected five hits in the opener.

Hope continues its sunshine tour on Friday, March 6 with two more games, the first against Roger Williams University at 12:15 p.m. and against Lebanon Valley College at 2:30 p.m.
