Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Greg Chandler

Women's Lacrosse Edged by John Carroll

A second-half rally by the Hope College women's lacrosse team fell one goal short Saturday afternoon as the Flying Dutch suffered their first loss of the season, 13-12, to John Carroll (Ohio) University at Van Andel Stadium.

The loss dropped Hope to 4-1 on the season, while JCU, which reached the second round of last year's NCAA Division III tournament, improved to 2-3.

The Flying Dutch started strong, taking a 2-0 lead five minutes into the game on goals by senior midfielder Caleigh Randall (Lansing, Michigan/DeWitt) and sophomore midfielder Megan Bushart (Caledonia, Michigan/Caledonia).

However, the visiting Blue Streaks came back to score seven of the next eight goals to take a 7-3 lead midway through the second quarter. JCU led 8-4 at halftime.

"We weren't ourselves, and when we are ourselves and when we're playing loose and when we have fun with the game, we are awesome and we're pretty good," head coach Keagan Pieri said. "Today, we were a little bit tight and intense, and that was the difference."

The Flying Dutch righted themselves in the second half, scoring four goals in the third quarter to cut into the John Carroll lead. A man-up goal by senior attacker Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Forest Hills Central) pulled Hope to within 10-8 at the end of the quarter.

After a Blue Streaks goal early in the fourth quarter, the Flying Dutch pulled to within one on goals 33 seconds apart by Randall and sophomore attacker Kayla Reis (Westfield, Indiana/Westfield), cutting the John Carroll lead to 11-10. Randall's goal was the 100th of her career, making her the eighth player in Hope women's lacrosse history to score 100 career goals.

The Blue Streaks responded with a pair of goals to extend their lead to 13-10, but Hope had one final push. Sophomore attacker Sarah Rott (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Catholic Central) and

Randall scored to pull the Flying Dutch to within one at 13-12 with 4:45 remaining, but they could not get the equalizer down the stretch.

"I have a ton of respect for John Carroll. I like their coach very well, they play very well. They're very clean players. We love to play them. It's good competition," Pieri said.

Randall and Rott each scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Hope offense, while Julia Brown scored twice and assisted on two other goals. Sophomore attacker Elliana Hillard (DeWitt, Michigan/DeWitt) had two goals.

Senior goalkeeper Samantha Smith (Westfield, Indiana/Westfield) made five saves for the Flying Dutch.

The team statistics closely reflected the closeness of the game. John Carroll outshot Hope 26-25, and the Flying Dutch committed 22 turnovers to 20 for the Blue Streaks. Hope collected 27 ground balls to 19 for JCU.

Anna Vaccarelli led the Blue Streaks with five goals and Abby Cassidy added four.

Hope will now play its next four games on the road, starting Saturday, March 21, at 11 a.m. at the University of Mount Union.
