Gibson Heethuis Sets Assists and Points Records, Men's Lacrosse Tops Edgewood

The junior totaled nine assists and 13 points on Tuesday

Attacker Gibson Heethuis provided hot hands — and record-setting ones — on a chilly afternoon for the Hope College men's lacrosse team.

The junior from Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) sparked the unbeaten Flying Dutchmen to a 23-5 victory against Edgewood University at home on Tuesday by contributing a school-record nine assists and 13 points.

Entering Tuesday's play, only five NCAA Division III men's lacrosse student-athletes had recorded more than nine assists in a game this season.

Heethuis surpassed the previous assist record of eight shared by Michael Mann (2024), Caleb Digison (2014) and Josh Kamstra (2013), and the points record shared by Gunnar Elder (2015) and Jacob Kamstra (2014, twice).

"Gibson has worked so hard on his game. For him to break the record that his high school coach and mentor, Gunnar Elder, held is so special," head coach Michael Schanhals said. "Gunnar and his father Bruce will be so happy for Gibson's success, and that he led us to a team record for assists as well speaks to his leadership. He creates so much space and so many opportunities for our team's offense."

The seventh win of the season matched the Flying Dutchmen's best start since 2021.

Heethuis recorded a point on 13 of Hope's first 16 goals that propelled the Orange and Blue to a 16-4 lead 2 1/2 minutes into the second half.

Heethuis shared team-high goal-scoring honors with sophomore attacker Preston Hoexum (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern).

Twelve different Flying Dutchmen scored against Edgewood (0-5), including senior Will Tobias (San Diego, California / St. Augustine), who totaled a season-high three.

Five teammates joined Tobias with their first goals of the season: senior Carl Bailey (Oxford, Michigan / Oxford), sophomores Tyler Berens (West Olive, Michigan / West Ottawa) and Beckett Monday (Sammamish, Washington / Skyline), and freshmen Ezra Carefelle (Norton Shores, Michigan / Mona Shores) and Tanner Schuette (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford).

Hope plays its next three games on the road, beginning on Saturday, March 21, at 2 p.m. Central time at Carroll University in Wisconsin.
