Baseball Edged by Olivet in MIAA Opener

Pinch-hitter Nick Verduzco delivered a game-tying, two-run single for the Hope College baseball team late in the MIAA opener on Friday, but The University of Olivet answered to win the series opener, 6-4, on Friday.

The Flying Dutchmen host Olivet for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28, at 1 p.m. at Boeve Baseball Stadium. It is the home opener.

Verduzco (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic) stepped to the plate with two outs after sophomore shortstop Colton Kinnie (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm) scored from third on a passed ball during a strikeout.

On a 2-2 pitch, Verduczo smacked a single a single to center that evened the score at 4-4, knocking in senior center fielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian), who reached base on an Olivet throwing error, and senior outfielder Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic), who earlier had walked.

In the bottom of the eighth, three consecutive Hope errors loaded the bases with nobody out. Olivet (9-7, 1-0 MIAA) capitalized with a Tyler Duncan sacrifice fly and an Owen Smith RBI double.

DeMann finished 2-for-4 with a double to lead Hope (6-13, 0-1 MIAA).
