Softball Shuts Out Roger Williams and Lebanon Valley

The Hope College softball team fired back-to-back shutouts on Friday in Clermont, Florida, blanking Roger Williams University, 3-0, and Lebanon Valley College, 6-0.

The Flying Dutch extended their winning streak to four games and raised their record to 4-2.

Against Roger Williams, Hailey Mellec (Commerce Township, Michigan / Walled Lake Northern) and Gianna Kerschbaum (Baroda, Michigan / Stevensville Lakeshore) combined for a four-hit shutout, each allowing two hits. The left-handed Mellec (2-2) struck out three and issued no walks over three innings. Kerschbaum recorded the save.

Against Lebanon Valley, Kerschbuam (2-0) scattered eight hits and three walks over seven innings. The right-hander struck out five.

Hope supported its pitchers with a three-run first against Roger Williams and two big innings against Lebanon Valley.

Catcher Macy Verbeek (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian) smacked a two-run single to start the Game 1 scoring, plating leftfielder Kate DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) and first baseman Sopnie Stironek (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion).

Verbeek later scored on a Kerschbaum double.

The Flying Dutch scored twice in the third against Lebanon Valley and four times in the seventh.

Verbeek started the scoring with a two-run single that knocked in DeMann and leftfielder Emily Brown (Grass Lake, Michigan / Grass Lake).

Verbeek followed DeMann's two-run single in the seventh with a two-run double.

Hope continues its trip down south on Saturday, March 7, with two more games: 10 a.m. against Carnegie Mellon and 2:30 p.m. vs. Wartburg College.
