Softball Edged Twice by Seventh-Inning Rallies

The Hope College softball team dropped a pair of close games on Saturday in Clermont, Florida, falling to Carnegie Mellon University, 3-2, on a walk-off single and an 11-8 to Wartburg College following a top of the seventh rally.

The Flying Dutch (4-4) will look to rebound on Monday, March 8, with their two finals games down south: 9 a.m. against Heidelberg University and 11 a.m. vs. Case Western Reserve University.

Against Carnegie Mellon, Hope tied the score at 2-2 on a two-run, sixth-inning double from junior catcher Macy Verbeek (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian).

Carnegie Mellon (8-1) recorded three hits in succession in the bottom of the seventh, the last a walk-off single from Jasmine Chao that scored catcher Gabrielle Yamoah.

Against Wartburg, the Flying Dutch led 3-0 after a two-run second and 8-7 after a four-run sixth.

The Knights (10-4) batted around in the top of the seventh, getting a go-ahead RBI single from leftfielder Liz Kruckenberg.

Verbeek finished 4-for-4 with two RBI singles.

Three Flying Dutch had two hits apiece: pitcher Gianna Kerschbaum (Baroda, Michigan / Stevensville-Lakeshore), junior first baseman/catcher Sophie Stironek (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) and third baseman Abby Whorton (Watervliet, Michigan / Waterviiet).
