Baseball Rallies to Split Saturday in Florida

Three scoreless innings of relief from pitchers Nic Bender and Josiah Long preserved a 5-3 victory for the Hope College baseball team against Saint Mary's University (Minnesota) on Saturday in Citrus Ridge, Florida.

Bender (Caledonia, Michigan / Caledonia) retired six of the seven batters he faced over two innings on the mound. The 6-7 righthander took over in relief of starter and winner pitcher Owen Weber (Canton, Michigan / Canton).

Long (Newaygo, Michigan / Newaygo) set Saint Mary's down in order in the ninth to record his first save of the season.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak. Earlier on Saturday, Hope lost to Illinois College, 16-6.

Hope (4-7) snapped a 3-3 tie against Saint Mary's in the top of the sixth. Senior rightfielder Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic) smacked a one-out, two-run single that brought home senior first baseman Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton) and senior designated hitter Charlie Saul (Batavia, Illinois / Batavia).

Collins finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including a fourth-inning, run-scoring single that knocked in Saul after he delivered a two-run double.

Weber (1-0) scattered six hits and three runs over six innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked two.

Against Saint Mary's, sophomore third baseman Nick Verduzco (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic) hit his first home run of the season.
