Baseball Takes Series Opener from Albion

A quality start from pitcher Noah Reeves — and four-hit games from right fielder Brenden Collins and shortstop Anthony Devito — propelled the Hope College baseball team to an 8-4 victory at Albion College in Friday's series opener.

The Flying Dutchmen host the finale of the three-game series on Saturday, April 11, at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader at Boeve Stadium.

Reeves, of Saline, Mich. (Saline), scattered six hits and one run over seven innings of the nine-inning game. The freshman left-hander struck out six for his first collegiate victory while walking four and hitting one batter.

Devito, a freshman from Lithia, Fla. (Newsome), went 4-for-5 with two RBIs on run-scoring singles. Collins, a senior from Kalamazoo, Mich. (Hackett Catholic), also finished 4-for-5 with an RBI double.

Hope snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring twice during the top of the third against Albion, which fell to 15-12 overall and 3-6 in MIAA play.

Devito led off the inning by smacking a double and moved to third when sophomore third baseman Nick Verduzco, of Kalamazoo, Mich. (Hackett Catholic). singled. After Verduzco stole second, senior designated hitter Charlie Saul, of Batavia, Ill. (Batavia), followed with an RBI single.

Senior first baseman Cade Seabaugh from Ballwin, Mo. (Ladue Horton), brought Verduzco home with a sacrifice fly.
