Men's Lacrosse Overpowers Albion, Sets Up Senior Day Showdown

Hope hosts Calvin in a matchup of MIAA unbeatens this weekend

An explosive Hope College men's lacrosse team opened a championship week with a bang.

The Flying Dutchmen scored the game's first five goals against Albion College on Wednesday, soaring to a 22-9 victory at Van Andel Stadium — their largest ever against the Britons.

Hope (14-0 overall, 4-0 MIAA) also set up a first-place showdown against Calvin University this weekend at home. The winner will clinch a share of the MIAA title and the top seed for the upcoming MIAA Tournament.

The Rivalry, lacrosse style, will take place on Saturday, April 18, at 1 p.m. It is Senior Day. Fans are advised to allow extra time to find parking because of Admitted Student Day on campus.

The Flying Dutchmen continued the best start in program history by seizing control quickly against Albion (8-6, 2-2 MIAA), scoring five times in a span of 3 minutes, 11 seconds early in the first half.

Sophomore attacker Jack Zuiderveen of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) sparked an Orange and Blue eruption 3 ½ minutes into the game, scoring off an assist from sophomore attacker Preston Hoexum of Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Eastern).

Four more teammates followed with goals before the Britons scored: The Flying Dutchmen struck five more times before the end of the quarter for a 10-3 lead.

Heethuis added another before the second quarter and recorded game-highs in goals (6), assists (4), and points (10). The junior became the first Hope standout to reach 50 assists.

Hoexum also dished out four assists to go along with four goals.

Hope excelled defensively as well, with Albion committing 28 turnovers and the Flying Dutchmen credited with 18 caused turnovers.

Sophomore long-stick midfielder Tyler Berens of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa), Hoexum and Zuiderveen were credited with three caused turnovers apiece. Senior goalie Jack Balmforth of Livonia, Michigan (Detroit Catholic Central) made 13 saves.

Hope's 14-game winning streak is the second-longest in program history.
