Men's Lacrosse Wins Big at Adrian, Wraps Up MIAA Title Three-Peat

The Hope College men's lacrosse team continued an accomplishment-filled run of MIAA play on Wednesday, winning the regular-season finale at Adrian College, 23-9, to secure a third consecutive outright league championship.

The unbeaten Flying Dutchmen became the second program in MIAA history to three-peat and set a program record by extending their winning streak to 16 games.

With a 6-0 league record, Hope claimed a sixth MIAA regular-season championship overall — most among league schools and matched Albion College's three-peat feat from 2015-2017.

Hope also surpassed the program-record 2018 win streak of 15 games, which happened after the Flying Dutchmen dropped their season opener.

Against Adrian, the Flying Dutchmen broke open a close game after the first 15 minutes by scoring all eight goals during the second quarter for an 11-2 halftime lead.

Freshman midfielder Brooks Clark of South Bend, Indiana (Penn) opened the scoring 1 ½ minutes into the second quarter. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, six more teammates had scored, including sophomore attack Jack Vuiderveen of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville), who equaled Clark with two goals during the quarter.

Hope finished with 14 different goal scorers. Freshman midfielder Jackson Vasquez of Lake Iron, Michigan (Lake Orion) topped the balanced attack with three goals.

Sophomore attack Preston Hoexum of Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Eastern) chipped in a team-best five points on two goals and three assists.

Junior attack Gibson Heethuis of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) also finished with three points on two goals and one assist. Earlier in the name, he was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association NCAA Division III Team of the Week.

The Flying Dutchmen eclipsed the 20-goal mark for the third time in four games and the sixth time this season.

Defensively, Hope held an opponent to single-digit goals for the 10th consecutive game. Senior goalie Jack Balmfort of Livonia, Michigan (Detroit Catholic Central) made 10 saves and allowed five goals.

Hope will next play in the MIAA Tournament semifinals, and as the top seed, will have home-field advantage. The Flying Dutchmen will host the winner between fourth-seeded Trine University and fifth-seeded Kalamazoo College on Saturday, April 25.

Tickets are on sale through the MIAA website and can be purchased at the gate. All MIAA Championships games will be streamed on the MIAA Sports Network.
