Softball Sweeps Adrian On Senior Day, Clinches Postseason Berth

Under a sunlit sky that seemed to honor the moment, the Hope College softball team swept Adrian College, 8–0 and 10–1, on Saturday, turning Senior Day into a showcase of dominance, gratitude, and postseason purpose.

The Flying Dutch played with the poise of a team intent on extending its season, and with the emotion of a program celebrating two cornerstone seniors who were honored during a pregame ceremony: Gianna Kerschbaum and Kate DeMann

With the sweep, Hope improved to 27–8 overall and 9–3 in the MIAA, holding firm in third place and officially clinching a postseason berth into the MIAA Tournament after Alma College took two from Kalamazoo College.

Game One unfolded with the calm assurance of a team fully settled into its moment. Hope wasted no time setting the tone, as freshman Emily Brown (Grass Lake, Michigan / Grass Lake HS) opened the bottom of the first with a soaring triple to right-center. Senior Kate DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) followed by driving a single up the middle and swiping second, jetting her to 16 total steals on the season, a team-leading feat.

The third inning transformed that early edge into full control. Brown singled again, DeMann drew a walk, and senior Gianna Kerschbaum (Baroda, Michigan / Stevensville-Lakeshore) stepped into a pivotal moment with a sacrifice fly to right that stretched the lead to 3–0.  Moments later, junior Macy Verbeek (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Calvin Christian) lined a single to center to bring home DeMann, whose base running and presence continued to anchor the rally.  By the end of the frame, Hope had built a 4–0 cushion and seized complete command of the game.

The sixth inning delivered the Senior Day flourish. Brown punched an RBI single, junior Terin Maynard (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Jenison) followed with another run-scoring hit, and DeMann fittingly capped the surge with a ringing RBI double to left-center to end the game to run-rule.

Behind the offense, Hope's defense stayed airtight, and junior Hailey Mellec (Commerce Township, Michigan / Walled Lake Northern) never allowed Adrian a foothold.

Mellec was dominant, firing a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts across six innings. The left-hander moved into fifth place for single-season strikeouts with 123.

DeMann had a standout performance in the opener, going 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a walk, while scoring twice in the win.  Kerschbaum added a key sacrifice fly and consistently applied pressure in run-producing moments. Brown (3-for-4, 3 R, 3B, RBI) and Maynard(3-for-3, 3 R, 3 RBI, 3B) powered the top of the lineup, while Verbeek added two hits and an RBI.

If the opener was steady dominance, the second game was a slow burn that erupted into a crescendo.

After falling behind 1–0 in the first, Hope's seniors helped flip the script in the third.  Junior Kenadee Schnick (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) singled and stole second, and with two aboard, DeMann punched a game-tying RBI single up the middle.  Moments later, Kerschbaum lifted a sacrifice fly to right, pushing the lead to 4–1 and giving the crowd another moment to roar.

But the sixth inning became the defining chapter yet again. Kerschbaum opened the frame by smashing a double to right-center. DeMann followed later in the inning with another single and eventually scored on junior Sophie Stironek's (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) two-run double.  By the time the dust settled, Hope had piled up eight hits and six runs in the inning, turning a tight game into a runaway celebration.

Kerschbaum authored a complete Senior Day performance with a 6.0-inning, 10-strikeout win in the circle, allowing just one run on seven hits, and adding a double, and an RBI at the plate.

DeMann stayed solid going 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, and a walk, scoring in both of Hope's major scoring frames.  Stironek delivered a standout 2-for-4, 3-RBI day, including the two-run double that broke the game open.  Verbeek added three hits and an RBI, while sophomore Jalen Fossitt (Onondaga, Michigan / Leslie), Brown, and Schnick each contributed key swings during the six-run sixth.

Hope takes on The Rivalry, softball edition, on Wednesday, April 29, for a doubleheader in Grand Rapids, Michigan at 3 p.m.
