Softball Aims to Rebound after Two Losses at Calvin

The Hope College softball team dropped a doubleheader at Calvin University, 8-2 and 5-3, on Thursday.

The Flying Dutch — who have already clinched a berth in next week's MIAA Tournament at Trine University — slipped to 26-10 overall and 9-5 in MIAA play.

Hope concludes the regular season on Saturday, May 2, at 1 p.m. at Alma College with a doubleheader. The Flying Dutch can clinch the No. 3 seed in the MIAA Tournament with a sweep.
On Thursday, Calvin (27-11, 13-3 MIAA) used a seven-run bottom of the sixth inning in Game 1 and a three-run top of the first in Game 2 to earn a sweep and secure the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tourament, presented by Collegiate Credit Union.

In Game 1, junior third baseman Terin Maynard of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Jenison) went 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored to lead Hope.

The Flying Dutch finished with four hits and RBIs on fielder's choices from freshman left fielder Emily Brown of Grass Lake, Michigan (Grass Lake) in the first and senior center fielder Kate DeMann of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian) in the fifth.

Calvin sent 13 batters to the plate during the decisive sixth, collecting six hits and three walks.

In Game 2, Hope never led after the Knights struck for three runs to start the game.

Senior pitcher Gianna Kerschbaum of Baroda, Michigan (Stevensville-Lakeshore) smacked an RBI single in the bottom of the first. Sophomore first baseman Jalen Fossitt of Onondaga, Michigan (Leslie) stroked an RBI double in the seventh. Hope stranded two runners on base during its at-bat.
