Softball Sweeps No. 23 Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Reaches 12-Game Winning Streak

The Hope College softball team had a blast this weekend in Eau Claire, Wis.

The red-hot Flying Dutch smacked eight extra-base hits and 24 hits total and swept 23rd-ranked University of Wisconsin Eau-Claire, 10-4 and 11-5, on Saturday. The games were played indoors.

Combined with Friday's two wins against Gustavus Adolphus College, Hope matched the third-longest winning streak in program history at 12 games. The 1996 and 1991 teams share the program's record with 18-game streaks.

The Flying Dutch now head into MIAA play next week with a 17-5 record. Hope next plays on Tuesday, April 7, at 3 p.m. at the University of Olivet.

In the first game senior designated player Gianna Kerschbaum of Baroda, Mich. (Stevensville-Lakeshore) led an 11-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with a two-run double and an RBI double.

Kerschaum's fifth-inning hit drove in junior third baseman Terin Meynard of (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Jenison for a 5-0 lead.

Freshman left fielder Emily Brown of Grass Lake, Michigan (Grass Lake) opened the scoring in the third inning by doubling to left-center and scoring center fielder Kenadee Schnick of Jenison, Mich. (Jenison).

Hope erupted for a four-run fourth, starting with a two-run, pinch-hit single from Sidnee Puffpaff of Macomb, Mich. (Dakota). Junior catcher Sophie Stironek of Lake Orion, Mich. (Lake Orion) scored when Eau Claire committed a throwing error on Schnick's stolen base. Schnick then came home on a single from right fielder Kate DeMann (Byron Center, Mich. / South Christian).

Winning pitcher Hailey Mellec of Commerce Township, Mich. (Walled Lake Northern) struck out 11 in 4.2 innings, one day after fanning an NCAA Division III-best 19 on Friday against Gustavus Adolphus. The left-hander allowed seven hits and four runs, including one unearned.

In the second game Maynard slugged a two-run homer two days into the first. Eau Claire answered a three-run rally in the first, but Hope grabbed the lead back with a four-run fourth that began on an RBI single from second baseman Jalen Fossitt of Onondaga, Mich. (Leslie).

Stironek delivered an RBI single that plated junior catcher Macy Verbeek of Grandville, Mich (Calvin Christian). Puffpaff blasted a run-scoring double. Brown closed the rally with an RBI single for the first of her three RBIs in the game.

Brown capped a five-run seventh with a two-run single.

Kerschbaum went the distance in the circle, yielding eight hits and five runs (one earned). The right-hander struck out four and walked four.
