Softball Blasts Olivet in MIAA Opener

Shortstop Becca Tuttle smacked a grand slam as the Hope College softball team swept The University of Olivet, 14-2 and 10-2, on Tuesday to open MIAA play.

The Flying Dutch recorded a pair of run-rule, five-inning victories to extend their winning streak to 14 games, the third-longest in program history.

Hope (19-5 overall) heads into a showdown against second-ranked Trine University on Saturday, April 11, at 1 p.m. at Wolters Stadium. Admission is free.

In the second game, Tuttle of Grand Rapids, Mich. (West Catholic), cleared the bases with a first-inning blast that capped a six-run rally in the bottom of the innings. Four batters earlier, freshman left fielder Emily Brown of Grass Lake, Mich. (Grass Lake) slugged a two-run homer following a leadoff double from senior right fielder Kate DeMann of Byron Center, Mich. (South Christian).

The Flying Dutch outhit Olivet (2-18, 0-4) by an 11-2 margin. Brown went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Freshman reliever Ryan Quain (St. Clair, Michigan / Marysville) pitched up her first win in relief. Quain (1-0) scattered three hits, two runs,  and two strikeouts over three innings in the circle.

In the first game, Hope broke open a close game with a seven-run top of the fourth, then tacked on five more during the fifth.

Nine different Flying Dutch collected an RBI, including junior third baseman Terin Maynard of Grand Rapids, Mich. (Jenison), with a game-high three on a two-run double in the fourth and the sacrifice fly in the fifth. Hope totaled 13 hits to Olivet's four.

Winning pitcher Hailey Mellec of Commerce Township, Mich. (Walled Lake Northern) limited Olivet to one hit during three innings in the circle. The left-hander struck out six and walked one, raising her record to 9-5.
