Team Effort Launches Men’s Soccer Past Adrian in Season Opener

Determined and patient, the Hope College men's soccer team delivered a satisfying start to the 2026 season.

The Flying Dutch scored in each half against Adrian College on Tuesday and earned a 2-0 non-league victory at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Goals from seniors Ryker Corstange and Caden Chenlo propelled the reigning MIAA regular-season champions against an opponent that had beaten NCAA Division I University of Detroit Mercy in an August 24 exhibition on the road.

"Total team effort," head coach David Blahnik said. "A big last year and prior years, we could find ways to win games but kind of needed to rely really on one or two guys to put us on their backs. We didn't need any of that today. We were able to play loads of freshmen, loads of new players. For a first game, we couldn't ask for more."

Corstange (Richland, Michigan / Gull Lake) blasted Hope into a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute.

The senior forward launched an 18-yard, right-footed kick from the top left of the penalty area, tight to the post.

Eight minutes into the second half, Chenlo (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) buried a loose ball in front of the net after a corner kick from senior midfielder Evan Tsandes (Park City, Utah / Park City) bounced through the Adrian defense.

The Flying Dutch dominated play, outshooting Adrian by a 33-3 margin. Senior goalkeeper Cooper Hutt (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) posted a two-save shutout.

Adrian keeper Eli Sizemore recorded 14 saves.

"We scheduled this game because we wanted an early challenge and so did they. We knew what [coach Charlie Miles] has done there the last few years. They've been one of the best rising programs in the country. We knew this could be a very difficult trap game for our guys — the second day of class, 4 p.m. game, and they're coming in flying. We respected them a lot, but we were more concerned about us showing up and doing what we needed to do. Our guys got an A-plus today."

Hope's next game is Saturday, Sept. 5, at 4:30 p.m. Central at Concordia University Chicago.
