Seth Walters Hat Trick Sparks Men’s Soccer Past Roanoke in First Meeting

Hope plays 10th-ranked Lynchburg next

Virginia was for Seth Walters' goal-lovers on Thursday night.

The senior forward recorded his first collegiate hat trick in a 4-1 Hope College men's soccer win over Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia.

Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph) scored the unbeaten Flying Dutch's first three goals, staking the Orange and Blue to a 3-0 lead less than two minutes into the second half against their Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent. It was the first meeting between the two teams.

"Seth had a well-deserved hat trick with great technical execution on all three goals," head coach David Blahnik said. "He has had several close calls this season and was due to have a multi-goal game like he did tonight."

Hope, which received votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III poll, raised its record to 5-0-1.

The Orange and Blue will play one more time in Virginia before returning home: Saturday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. at 10th-ranked University of Lynchburg.

Walters doubled his season goal total, giving him six this season and 35 for his career. The electrical engineering major tied Jason Muller (2010-13) and Dan Tresslar (2004-07) for seventh place all-time in Hope history.

Hope jumped to a 2-0 halftime lead against Roanoke (2-3). Walters buried a cross from the 18-yard mark in the 16th minute that deflected twice before falling at his feet. During the 21st minute, Walters snapped a cross from senior Josh Weigel (Naperville, Illinois) after Weigel received the ball at about half-field speed and dribbled past three defenders.

Walters completed his hat trick 1:43 into the second half, burning a free kick from 30 yards out, then capped a four-point night by setting up sophomore Jack Lowman's first goal of the season in the 87th minute. Junior Dylan Bott (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt) and Walters drew assists on the play.

Hope outshot Roanoke by a 7-3 margin. Senior goalkeeper Cooper Hutt (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) made two saves.

"The guys put in another impressive performance tonight, especially considering the amount of travel they've had in the last 24 hours," Blahnik said. "They are a really fun group to be around and are very committed to each other."
